Charleston 1

These streets aren't cobblestone but ballast stone brought over on ships & dumped here as the ships were filled with goods to take back to England.

All these old ports now have a River Walk, this one was particularly unimpressive.

Here are some more of the houses with the "side porches." Old Savannah is packed with them. The ceilings of the porches are usually painted haint blue to keep the bad spirits away.

Charleston was the main port for importing slaves. They were never sold at the central market but usually at the docks as soon as the ships landed. This was the best picture I could get of Fort Sumter. Most of its heighth was destroyed. This was the first city where they'd let me take Jake on an air conditiioned bus. But wouldn't let us on the boat to go out to the fort. If you peer very hard at the photo of Jake & me, Fort Sumter is directly above the stone pillar.

Students graduating from The University of South Carolina located here in Savannah don't wear cap & gowns. The girls wear a white formal & carry a red rose, the guys a white dinner jacket with a red rose boutonnière.

This is the Civl War submarine the Hunley. The boom on the front end was called a torpedo. It was filled with gunpowder & when the Hunley rammed it into a ship, it need to get away pronto.
