Fredericksburg #2 Chatham Mansion
This house is on a hill opposite the battlefields of Fredericksburg. It was owned by a wealthy family. They & their slaves could see the Civil War battles from the high point of the house. Chatham is the only home in America visited by George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Walt Whitman & Clara Barton. This house served as Union Headquarters during the Battle of Fredericksburg. One winter over 100 solders were housed here. I took a photo of the graffiti where they had torn down wood paneling to burn & wrote their unit number, etc. on the underlying plaster. It later served as a hospital for the Union wounded. These photos are of the back entrance. I didn't have time to walk to the front because Jake was in the car with the air conditioner on.
