It took the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, 14 years to complete the 4 faces. It is said that he knew the granite & its rate of erosion & the sculpture is to most closely resemble the presidents in 2031. 
There's a lot of photos of the faces but I wanted to show how the sun played on them at different times.
One of the drillers was in the book store signing a book about the sculptures.
